yard sale finds

I come from a long line of thrift store and
yard sale shoppers. My grandma is the queen of bargain shopping! If I
ask her to find me some random item, she'll find it within a week.
Me, I don't usually have such luck. My aunt has the bargain shopping
gene too and she found these two fun items for me a few weeks ago.

First, an old twin-sized quilt top (complete with batting and backing fabric).
I love the intricate star pattern in these blocks. Any ideas on the
name of this pattern? I'm definitely going to be basting, quilting and
binding this top into a quilt soon.

Then, she found this weaving loom kit. She knew that I wanted to
try weaving and found this wooden rigid heddle loom (I think). The
directions are kind of mildewed shut, so I'm going to scavenge around
the internet to find some instructions for setting up the loom. (Yes,
this is another fiber project that I don't have time for, I realize).

  2. what great finds!
i think the quilt's name should have something to do with either fireworks or ninja throwing stars.
good luck with the loom - i hope you can figure out how to set it up! what fun!

  4. Oooh! a loom! I understand the siren call of new crafty skills. Can't wait to see some weaving from you!
on a side note.... I just discovered yesterday that there is such a thing as a "Crafting Cruise" (awesome!) but they all seem to be focused on only one craft (a knitting cruise, a beading cruise, etc.). Don't you think we need to organize the flickr peeps (and other interested parties) and do a multi-craft cruise? think of the possibilities! or.... maybe I should just go to squam next year, eh? skip all the added gratuity and cheesy entertainment. still.... can you imagine being free to work on any one of, say, 20 crafts at your own pace and whim? sorry. this comment got long. maybe i should blog about it instead.

  14. Such great finds! Did I mention that I got a rigid heddle loom a few months ago from Craig's List? I haven't even touched it yet because I don't have the energy nor the time right now. Too many knitting projects are in the works. But I am already imagining beautiful scarves made from my sock yarn stash.

  16. It looks like some kind of rigid heddle loom but from your photo I can't see how the front and back warp beams rotate (maybe they don't?). I would ask around on the rigid heddle loom group on ravelry if you need help setting it up.

  20. Awesome. I NEVER find old quilts at garage sales. I live in an area thats mostly new suburbs, so the garage sales suck. Maybe someday....
